Draft ACT Parking Strategy

The Draft ACT Parking Strategy (PDF PDF 1.63Mb) discusses the intended policy and practical direction of parking in Canberra for the next 15-20 years. The draft Strategy document was released for public comment on 1 March 2007. The public comment period closed on 7 May 2007. A final Strategy is expected to be released in the next few months.

A change to parking policy

The current parking policy in the ACT is to provide an adequate supply of convenient and reasonably priced car parking to support economic and social activities. Although the policy generally acknowledges broader city planning goals about land use diversity and sustainability, it has been more directed towards demand satisfaction rather than demand management.

The Draft ACT Parking Strategy proposes to shift policies more towards demand management rather than demand satisfaction. It aims to strike a balance between demand for parking, availability of parking and the price of parking within a broader goal of sustainable transport which encourages more walking, cycling and use of public transport.

This is in line with key objectives of the Sustainable Transport Plan, which are to encourage people to use more environmentally friendly modes of transport while maintaining high levels of accessibility, lowering overall costs and achieving economic and social goals for Canberra.
