VEHICLE VERGE DISPLAY PERMITS
Information
The use of public roadside space or verges by vehicle dealerships is popular practice across a number of districts of Canberra but can conflict with the needs and safety requirements of road users, pedestrians and the vehicle dealer's lease purpose clauses. A permit system has been introduced to allow dealerships to use roadside verges adjacent to their properties while not alienating that space from public use.
Permits are not automatically provided. Issues arising from occupation of the verge require management and a number of factors must be considered. These include:
-
safety of members of the public, staff and customers
-
retention of urban amenity, open space, accessibility and permeability
-
existing access for pedestrians, people with disabilities, prams and future pedestrian requirements
-
the slope of the area under consideration
-
vehicle access on and off the permit area
-
emergency services and service facilities access
